A day in the life: Pt.2

DITL-2

10:04:44am. Federation Square.
I arrive in the city, grey and overcast as expected. There’s an ice skating setup just down near the river, and I’m on my way to check it out. On the way there I spy the Arts Centre spire, reflected and refracted and distorted. I think it fits with the Fed Square aesthetic, all angles, lines, and jagged assemblages. I like the way the spire is so visible around this area, reflected in the river, in the windows, peeking around the corners of buildings up and down South Bank. It’s an anchor of sorts, and so it seems a good way to start my wanderings…

Melbourne 365: Day 361

Apparently the original design of the¬†Arts Centre called for this spire to be wrapped in sheets of metal. It would have been a very different structure had this happened… instead, we have a structure that suggests rather than prescribes form, that evokes and provokes imagined shapes. In many ways, then, we have a structure rather like the arts housed within it…

(Sharon’s interpretation of the Arts Centre Melbourne¬†is on her blog here.)
