A day in the life: Pt.3

DITL-3

10:08:56am. Federation Square (the back bit).
The ice skating rink is interesting in a “you wouldn’t expect to find one of these in Melbourne” sort of way, but not really in a “that’s a great photograph!” sort of way, so I move on. In trying to gain an elevated view of the rink, I’ve found myself in a quiet part of Fed Square that I’ve not ever really noticed before. There’s a transparent plastic roof on this part, and as I look up to admire the angles of the buildings (I really do like the architecture of Fed Square), I see these leaves. It’s actually the ‘ghost leaf’ on the left that catches my attention first; I see it as something of a metaphor for the Autumn/Winter transition that, at least in my mind, is still under way. The last leaves are still hanging on, but more let go every day, and we tread through them, grinding them into the footpath in a kind of grey pulp. And then they are gone. Not even shadows left behind…

Melbourne 365: Day 352

Today is the turn of Federation Square (or Fed Square as it’s known locally)… a fairly recent addition to Melbourne’s collection of quirky architecture, having only been around for about 14 years now, but in that time it’s served its intended purpose of providing a meeting place, an event space, a controversial, highly fragmented, highly geographical construction theme, and it’s hard to imagine Melbourne without it.

This particular view is of The Atrium, an interesting space between spaces, that shows off some of the immense web of steel that is a recurring design element across the buildings of the Square. I’m sure there is repetition in the pattern somewhere, but it’s beyond my powers of observation to find it!

(Sharon’s interpretation of Fed Square is on her blog here.)

Melbourne 365: Day 207

I’m standing in the middle of a street full of angles; they pile up on top of each other, thin, translucent, like tracing paper over gridlines. They are irregular, an intricate layer of chaos. The exit is clear, but the path is much more interesting around the edges…

Melbourne 365: Day 206

So, I’m not sure what it’s like where you are, but here in Melbourne right now, Summer is toying with us. We’re like mice in its claws – we’re allowed to move, but only so far… two days of sun, warmth, breezy afternoons, and it’s all shorts and sunscreen all over. But then the next day, bam! It’s back to long sleeves and winter blankets.

Isn’t it time you made up your mind, Summer? Either let us go, or finish us quickly…

Melbourne 365: Day 206

Melbourne 365: Day 82

Federation Square – an interesting space. Fractured, ruptured, full of lines, angles, shapes, and at the moment, colours. Like finding yourself in a rift, with the world you know just out of reach, firmly in sight, while all around you the buildings are collapsing, folding in on themselves. And yet time is frozen, and so it’s always in a state of unbecoming, while outside, home, life keeps marching by.

A little over the top perhaps, but that’s something of the feeling of the place for me, and something of what I tried to show in this shot…
